One of the big complaints I hear about Malifaux is "I've tried to read the rulebook and the game makes no sense.". Honestly, that doesn't surprise me, Malifaux seems to be the game that is simple despite the rulebook. That being said, here is my tips and tricks:
1) Buy the Rules Manual. I know you can download the Rules for free from Wyrd. That being said, the pictures are worth the $15 in simplifying the rule explanations.
2) Measurement is always Horizontal from an overhead view.
3) Height of an object affects Melee range and climbing. Other than that ignore it.
4) A model always has line of sight and distance to itself.
5) Towards means end closer, away means end farther away. Directly means in a straight line.
6) Pushes stop when they hit something.
7) You can't decide not to flip if the rules say to.
8) The Black Joker is zero, not auto-fail. If stat plus 0 is greater then the target number it still passes.
9) A willpower duel works just like a normal duel, just with different stats.
10) Each model can do a lot. Learn three things each model can. Once you have that down, add another. Repeat until you know everything.
11)You are allowed to see your opponents stat card unless the tournament says no.
12) Triggers are voluntary.
13) The Wyrd Forums are a great place to ask questions and get rulings.
